چکیده

The interaction of thermal neutrons with U results in fission with a probability of 85% and in the formation of U (t1/2 = 2.3 10 yr) with a probability of 15%. While anthropogenic U is, therefore, present in spent nuclear fuel at levels of U/U up to 10 , the expected natural ratios in the pre-anthropogenic environment range from 10 14 to 10 . At VERA, systematic investigations suggest a detection limit below U/U = 5 10 12 for samples of 0.5 mg U, while chemistry blanks of 2 10 atoms U per sample limit the sensitivity for smaller samples. We have found natural isotopic ratios in uranium reagents separated before the onset of human nuclear activities, in uranium ores from various origins and in water from a subsurface well in Bad Gastein, Austria. Anthropogenic contamination was clearly visible in soil and rivulet samples from Salzburg, Austria, whereas river sediments from Garigliano river (Southern Italy) were close to the detection limit. Finally, our natural in-house standard Vienna-KkU was calibrated against a certified reference material (IRMM REIMEP-18 A). 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. Assessment of Heavy Metals in Road Dust of Behbahan City, Iran: Distribution, Sources and Health Risks

Introduction: Road dust is a group of solid particles that are presented in the urban areas and are originated from both natural and human-induced sources. This study aims to determine concentrations of heavy metals in urban dusts in Behbahan to identify their natural or anthropogenic sources. Materials and Methods: In this study, a total of 20 samples were collected from main roads with diffe...

Natural and Anthropogenic Source of Heavy Metals Pollution in the Soil Samples of an Industrial Complex a Case Study

Background: Soil serves as a major reservoir for contaminants as it can bind to various chemicals. The aim of this study was to evaluate the levels of some metals (Cd, Cu, Fe and V) in soil samples collected from different stations of Ahvaz Industrial Complex II to determine the natural and anthropogenic contribution of metal in the soil. Methods: This was an experimental study that carried ou...

Determination of uranium isotopes (234U, 238U) and natural uranium (U-nat) in water samples by alpha spectrometry

Background: Due to the potential public health effects of releases of uranium to the environment, isotopic determination and measurement of this radionuclide in environmental samples is very important. Achieving this goal, monitoring programs for this radionuclide seems necessary to be applied in many countries. Materials and Methods: The uranium was separated from the water samples using anion...

Investigation on anthropogenic and natural share of heavy metals in surface sediments of Shadegan wetland

Accumulation of trace metals in sediment can cause severe ecological impacts. The present study determines the elemental concentrations and chemical partitioning of heavy metals in surface sediment of Shadegan wetland. Shadegan wetland is one of the most important wetlands in southwest of Iran and it is in Ramsar-listed wetlands. For this purpose, 7 sampling stations were selected for sediment ...

Spatial distribution and degree of heavy metal pollution in urban roadside dusts from Sanandaj, Iran

Industrial activities and high traffic density are the most important heavy metal pollution sources in urban areas. Roadside dust created by atmospheric deposition can be one of the best indicators for heavy metal contamination levels. The present study reports the spatial distribution patterns and degree of heavy metal pollution (Cd, Cr, Ni, Pb, Zn, and As) in 50 roadside dust samples from urb...
